Drugs macerate the body, permanently altering one’s physical and mental state. To prolong their lives, humans swallow pills and recalibrate their physiology, rendering the flesh into data and then confining those data within a prescribed range. One can hardly fail to notice how closely this process resembles “rope bondage”: the two share the same object, the human body; the same purpose, discipline and restraint; and the same outcome, a body and mind thoroughly steeped. Having drunk its fill of the medicinal solution, the flesh gradually softens, releasing its natural juices while absorbing the flavors added to it, and becomes plump and delectable.
